Number of Japanese residents in Russia 2014-2023
As of October 2023, approximately one thousand Japanese residents lived in Russia, the lowest number within the past decade. The Japanese expat population had already been shrinking gradually over the past seven years after numbers peaked in 2015 at close to 2.8 thousand residents, but various factors resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war starting in February 2022 contributed to the sudden drop of almost 900 Japanese citizens leaving the country.
The statistic, which is based on the information gathered by Japanese diplomatic missions abroad, does not include descendants of Japanese emigrants (nikkeijin) who do not hold Japanese citizenship. People with multiple citizenship are counted.
