According to a survey conducted in November 2019, approximately 73.7 percent of Japanese respondents stated not having a criminal record as one of the most important requirements for foreign nationals to be granted permanent residence in Japan. At a respondent share of around 71.6 percent, paying taxes and social insurance premium in Japan was also a commonly named as a requirement for the acquisition of permanent resident status.
