Production of bananas in South Africa 2000-2019
As of 2018/2019, the preliminary production volume of bananas in South Africa amounted to roughly 416.5 thousand metric tons. This represented an increase of approximately 3.3 percent from the previous year. Between 2000 and 2019, a slight growing trend is visible, however drastic fluctuations can be observed ranging between 463.3 thousand in 2013/2014 and 277.03 thousand metric tons in 2003/2004. During the same period the average quantity was 372.34 thousand metric tons. Due to bananas being a tropical crop, this leads the production to be affected by climate, even though they are adaptable plants. Moreover, slight increases in quantity produced could be linked to the fact that the area where bananas can be grown in South Africa are limited.
