Primary petrochemicals' carbon footprint distribution 2020, by source
The largest share of primary petrochemicals' carbon footprint is embedded in the product, that is, it gets released as emissions at the end of life through incineration or landfilling. As of 2020, that figure ranged from 65 to 73 percent, depending on the material. The remaining 27 to 35 percent are carbon emissions released during the production process.
