In order to reach the basic materials industry's net-zero emissions goal by 2050, an increase of the carbon capture and storage (CCS) capacity is required. The cement industry alone would need a CCS capacity of 1.37 billion tons of CO₂ per year, while the ammonia industry would require some 55 million tons of CO₂ per year worth of CCS to reach the net-zero target by 2050.
Required carbon capture and storage (CCS) capacity for net-zero basic materials industry worldwide by 2050, by segment (in million tons CO₂ per year)
