There were almost 50,000 premature deaths in Italy attributable to exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations above the WHO AQ guideline in 2021. PM2.5 can lead to many health issues, such as lung cancer, asthma, and strokes. In 2022, Milan recorded the highest average PM2.5 concentrations of Italy's metropolitan cities.
