Chemical industry in selected world regions
The chemical industry is expected to grow worldwide. The EU is projected to increase development from 464 billion euros to 885 billion euros by 2020 and at the same time, Asia is projected to experience a significant growth from 300 billion euros to 1,399 billion euros, respectively. The industry in China alone is growing quickly and expected to contribute to a large portion of the industry in Asia and worldwide. The industry has grown in the last decade, garnering total revenue of 1,779 billion U.S. dollars in 2002 and 5,012 billion U.S. dollars in 2012.
The chemical industry is a multi-faceted sector which produces a wide variety of products for many different industries. The industry produces basic, specialty, and consumer chemicals. Consumer chemicals include products such as detergents and soaps. Production of pharmaceuticals was expected to increase up to 4.3 percent from 2013 to 2014. Some of the largest chemical companies are located in Germany, including Bayer and BASF, which both had market values of over 100 billion U.S. dollars in 2014. Germany exported about 163.6 billion euros worth of chemical goods in 2013, compared to 698.9 billion euros from the total EU.
