The Canadian brewing industry
Canadians were first introduced to beer in the seventeenth century by European colonists. Since refrigeration had not yet been introduced, Canada’s climate provided the perfect conditions for making beer and keeping it cool. Since then the industry has grown and grown. Revenue generated through the brewing industry reached approximately 6.43 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 and this figure is estimated to rise to around 6.77 billion U.S. dollars by 2023. The number of employees in the industry is also expected to increase to around 11,000 by 2023.
Provincial comparisons
The gross domestic product (GDP) for the brewing sector amounted to around 1.45 billion Canadian dollars in Ontario in 2017. This figure towers above all others, making Ontario the brewing capital of Canada; Quebec ranked in second place with a brewing GDP of around 680 million Canadian dollars.
