The hot beverage market is often broken down into several key categories: coffee, tea and other hot beverages including hot chocolate, malted and mulled drinks. A regular part of many consumers’ diets, hot beverages are often consumed in social settings. Originating in Turkey, coffee culture best describes the communal aspects of coffeehouses and coffee consumption. Today, it can also describe the profound impact coffee and coffeehouses have had on the hot beverage market.
In Canada, the hot drinks market was worth approximately 1.23 billion Canadian dollars in 2014 and is forecast to reach almost 1.4 billion Canadian dollars in 2019. Among the leading companies in the hot drinks market that year were food processors Mondelez International and Nestle.
In 2014, coffee accounted for 67 percent of the hot drinks market in Canada. Household expenditure on coffee used at home fell between 11 and 30 Canadian dollars per month, for more than 60 percent of consumers, with the average price of roasted coffee retailing for around 6.5 Canadian dollars in 2015. As of March 2016, approximately 34 percent of Canadians drank one to three coffees at home per week and only 3.61 percent claiming not to drink coffee at home at all.
