Popular tea brands in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2019
Classic PG Tips remains a favorite
Standard PG Tips remains the most favored product offered by the brand. Although the number of users has fallen in recent years, an estimated 7.6 million people still use it. Although far less popular than the standard variety, the number of herbal, fruit, or green tea users has increased since 2013 to just under one million. Originally called Pre-Gestee, PG Tips was first introduced to the United Kingdom in 1930.
Decline in tea drinking
Although long associated with Britain, tea is gradually losing popularity in the country. Tea purchases have been declining steadily since 2008, whilst sales of coffee have been increasing. Between 2006 and 2017, the average purchase per person per week of tea fell from 30 grams to 25 grams.
