A glance at historical data reveals that in Italy, the gross energy production from biomass and waste increased from 10,832 gigawatt hours in 2010 to 19,282 gigawatt hours in 2017. During the last year considered, biomass accounted for six percent of the total Italian energy mix.
Heat from solid biomasses
In 2017, the household direct consumption of heat generated from solid biomasses peaked at 282,916 terajoules. Firewood was the most common type of biomass among householders. Also, in recent years pellet became increasingly popular.
