The return on assets of the United States commercial banking industry increased notably in the first quarter of 2023. The trend in 2022 was similar to the past when between 2003 and 2007, the ROA remained relatively stable, but started a sharp incline in 2007 due to the financial crisis. The ROA of the U.S. banking industry hit a record low value of negative 1.86 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018. After that, it continued to rise, although with fluctuations. After the first quarter of 2021, the ROA of the U.S. banking industry stared to decrease again until the third quarter of 2022, which marked the starting point of a period of stable increase until the first quarter of 2023.
