Japan: monthly hospital bed occupancy rate by type of patient 2023

Around 84 percent of hospital beds for patients in chronicity period such as long-term care patients in Japan were occupied as of the end of December 2023. Approximately 32.2 percent of the beds for patients with infectious diseases such as COVID-19 were in use during the measured period.

Monthly occupancy rate = number of hospitalized patients* at the end of the month / number of hospitals bed at the end of the month x 100
*The number of hospitalized patients refers to inpatients who occupy a bed at midnight each day, regardless of the number of beds initially designated for certain diseases. The number of patients occupying beds designated for patients with infectious diseases includes the number of patients occupying beds designated for patients with common diseases as an emergency measure. The bed occupancy rate for patients with infectious diseases can, therefore, exceed 100 percent.
