The year of 2023 was a particularly tragic in terms of the number of deaths and disappearances of irregular immigrants en route to Spain. The route to the Canary Islands, one of the most deadliest migratory routes in the world, was where the most people lost their lives or went missing, with a total of 2,194 persons. It was followed by the Alborán, with a total of 326. At least 2,789 people are known to have died or gone missing while trying to reach the shores of the Mediterranean country that year.
