Global warming potentials (GWP) of methane emissions 2021, by type and period
Methane has a shorter lifespan than carbon dioxide, living in the atmosphere for around a decade. However, it is a far more potent greenhouse gas. Over a 100-year time period, the global warming potential (GWP) of methane emissions is roughly 28 times greater than carbon dioxide, and around 80 times more potent over a 20-year period.
