Triennial debit card penetration in Mexico 2011-2024, by demographic
According to a three-year survey, one out of four Mexicans owned a debit card in 2017 but only 13 percent used one. While there was research for 2021 - which was released in mid-2022 - Mexico is one of the few countries that did not receive new figures, hence why data only goes up to 2017. The difference between ownership and usage was roughly 11 percentage points in 2017, an increase when compared to 2017. The report adds that men were more likely than women to own such a payment card in the North American country. Gen Z - or the age group 15 to 24 years in this survey - generally owned fewer debit cards than their older counterparts.
