India: plastic packaging waste recycling targets

India's recycling targets for plastic packaging waste of categories I and IV – which include rigid and flexible plastic packaging, respectively – are set to increase from 50 percent in financial year 2025 to 80 percent in financial year 2028. Meanwhile, recycling targets for category II and III plastic packaging waste will rise from 30 percent to 60 percent between financial years 2025 and 2028.

Category I: rigid plastic packaging.
Category II: flexible plastic packaging of single layer or multilayer (more than one layer with different types of plastic), plastic sheets or like and covers made of plastic sheet, carry bags, plastic sachet or pouches.
Category III: multilayered plastic packaging with at least one layer of plastic and at least one layer of material other than plastic.
Category IV: plastic sheet or like used for packaging as well as carry bags made of compostable plastics.
