Regarding the greenhouse gas output of different industries, the business sector generated the highest volume with 131 million tons of CO2 equivalent produced. This was followed by 120.2 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent generated by the energy supply sector. For the public sector, 8.2 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent were produced that year.
Historically, carbon dioxide emission levels increased from 687.8 million tons of carbon dioxide emitted in 1965 when they peaked at 718.2 million tons in 1973. Over the following years, carbon dioxide emissions decreased, totaling 398 million tons emitted in 2017.
By 2035, carbon dioxide emissions were projected to reach 283 million metric tons in the United Kingdom, of which 68 million metric tons would be emitted from industries and 17 million metric tons from power stations.
